Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship, based at Loughborough University, on the player requirements and playability of elite level field hockey surfaces, currently predicated on short pile artificial carpets with large volumes of water required to provide ideal play conditions. This research aims to address the limitations in current guidance, balancing field compliance testing and player feedback.
The key outcomes anticipated included: New player (and mechanical) testing protocols to measure playability (and state) of a surface from a user’s perspective; Comparisons between different playing surfaces and their conditioning (i.e. watering); underpinning research to inform future FIH regulations and product innovations.
The research is supported by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) through its innovation partnership with Loughborough University and will involve collaboration with several parties regarding programme management and access to players and facilities.
