Introduction

Welcome to the International Sports Engineering Association (ISEA).

ISEA serves the global community of sports engineers by promoting the technical aspects of sports engineering and by providing a collaborative environment for the collecting and dissemination of knowledge in the field of sports engineering and technology. It is open to individual and corporate membership.

You can join the ISEA by completing the form below. You should indicate how you wish to make payment at the bottom and supply your details if you wish to pay by credit card. The subscription fee for 2010 is £110.  This will entitle you to membership to the ISEA and you will receive copies of Sports Engineering for that year (4 copies) published by Springer.

Comments from the President

Professor Alan Bramley, University of Bath, UK

Having just picked up the Presidential baton from my predecessor, Mont Hubbard, I welcome you to the ISEA website. In doing so I must give credit to Mont for being instrumental in recognising the growth of the ISEA and the need to review its structure and activities during his period of office.  He has established a firm basis for our continued operation. Together with the members of the Executive Committee I will be working to ensure that Mont's initiatives are implemented.

Sports Engineering is, in an academic sense, a new and emerging discipline often viewed with some scepticism by the 'authorities' but one only has to look through the ISEA conference proceedings, The Engineering of Sport, and ISEA Journal of Sports Engineering to realise that it is rapidly becoming a mature sub-discipline of engineering embodying much academic rigour and new technology. However, to create an environment of research funding opportunities we need to do all we can to ensure that the quality of research is kept high and that it has perceived benefits to our industrial economies as well as sports participants whether it be in the short or long term. The ISEA will be doing all it can to support this.

In our biennial series of ISEA conferences we had our most recent event in Biarritz, France. This was truly an excellent showcase for Sports Engineering with over 300 delegates attending and we look forward now to the 8th event in the series being hosted by our colleagues at the Fachhochschule Technikum in Vienna, Austria.

The ISEA journal is now competing with several other related journals that have recently appeared and I expect that the ISEA Journal of Sports Engineering, now in twelfth year will continue as a premier journal in the discipline. The Journal is now published by Springer. Please consider submitting your research publication to the Journal.

Our database, only accessible to members of the ISEA, is very useful and I know that project students and researchers alike make good use of the rich source of information on Sports Engineering research that it contains. We plan to extend this further on a collaborative basis with other sports research organisations.

Finally we have a discussion list where members can pose questions and seek advice, again, especially useful for project students

We have two grades of membership that give access to our facilities; Full Membership includes receiving copies of the Journal and Student Membership that excludes the Journal but has access to everything else. Further details are elsewhere on the website.

Come and join us.
